The OODA Loop: How Fighter Pilots Make Fast and Accurate Decisions

Farnam Street, after Col. John Boyd · 2021

"Fast, high-stakes decisions are best made through a repeating four-step loop — Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — where speed and comfort with uncertainty matter more than exhaustive analysis, and where 'orienting' (stripping away your own cultural and cognitive biases) is the decisive, most-overlooked step."

The idea

The loop has four repeating stages: Observe (gather the most accurate, current picture of the situation, filtering out noise); Orient (the crucial, least intuitive step — strip away your own cultural assumptions, biases, and outdated mental models to see the situation as it actually is); Decide (choose an action based on that oriented picture); Act (execute, then feed the results back into the next Observe stage).
