The idea

PG noticed that people who do outstanding work usually have a disinterested obsession with their subject — a fascination with something specific, pursued for its own sake, that looks as pointless to the world as collecting bus tickets. Ambition and curiosity together are rare; obsession alone can carry you further than either.
