The Strata of Perceptual Reality

Aperture · 2024

"Human perception does not interact with base reality; rather, it navigates a layered construct ranging from evolutionary sensory filtering to complex societal consensus and theoretical simulation."

The idea

"Reality" is intuitively understood as the absolute state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they appear or are imagined. But biology and psychology show humans don't experience reality directly — the brain constructs a filtered, evolutionarily optimized model designed for survival, not objective truth. This baseline experience is "consensus reality": an agreed-upon framework of physical laws, social norms, and sensory input that lets populations function without processing the universe at a granular level.
