The Architecture of Axiomatic Beliefs

Aperture · 2024

"Human worldviews are built on a fragile foundation of unexamined axioms — hidden structural beliefs that, if dismantled, cause cascading existential crises and the collapse of personal identity."

The idea

Everyone operates through a lens of belief — religious, secular, political, economic — but the foundational pillars are rarely chosen consciously. They're absorbed through cultural osmosis and childhood conditioning. Most people never question the baseline axioms of their existence — the inherent value of labor, the linear meaning of progress, the necessity of a legacy. These unexamined structures buy real psychological safety, shielding the mind from an indifferent universe and providing a script for daily living.

Preference Falsification

"People routinely misrepresent what they want under social pressure. Aggregated, those small lies hold up regimes and norms almost nobody privately supports, make them look stable right up to the moment they collapse, and corrupt what a society is able to know about itself."
