From early childhood, people are indoctrinated into the "Just-World Hypothesis": hard work is rewarded, bad deeds are eventually punished, fairness prevails. The harder truth: the universe has no moral ledger. Hard work doesn't guarantee success, toxic people prosper without consequence, and catastrophic failure can happen to someone doing everything right. Recognizing this asymmetry is a painful but necessary step toward actually functioning in the world as it is.
