The Intelligence Explosion and ASI Alignment

Science Time · 2023

"The transition from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) will likely occur as an instantaneous, recursive self-improvement loop, making the alignment of machine ethics the ultimate bottleneck for human survival."

The idea

Current AI is "narrow" — excellent at specific tasks like language or image generation but lacking general reasoning. AGI would mean human-level performance across all domains — but that's not the finish line, just a brief milestone. Once a machine reaches human parity at coding, it can start iterating on its own source code, which is the on-ramp to Artificial Superintelligence: an intellect vastly smarter than the best humans in every field.

Fusion Ignition at the National Ignition Facility

"On 5 December 2022, 192 lasers delivered 2.05 megajoules to a peppercorn-sized capsule of hydrogen isotopes and got 3.15 megajoules of fusion energy back — the first laboratory fusion reaction to release more energy than was put into the fuel. It proved the physics of ignition and left every engineering problem of fusion power still to solve."
