Illusion of Transparency: Your Poker Face is Better Than You Think

Farnam Street (Shane Parrish) · 2019

"We consistently overestimate how visible our internal emotional state is to other people — the 'illusion of transparency' — because we're anchored on our own intense subjective experience, when in reality other people are usually too absorbed in their own concerns to notice."

The idea

The illusion of transparency is the gap between how obvious we think our internal emotional state is to others and how much they can actually detect — because we're intensely focused on our own feelings (an egocentric anchor), we assume that intensity radiates outward, when in fact people around us are absorbed in their own thoughts and rarely scrutinize our expressions closely enough to read us accurately.
